November 23, 1983.... The cry of Microbiologist to be in the University of the Philippines Los Baños was answered when the UPLB Microbiological Society(TUMS), otherwise known as MicroSoc was recognized through the effort of 23 Biology students(all but one are Microbiology majors). The organization aims to unify Microbiologists in the university, to promote Microbiology and to help the community through knowledge in Microbiology.
In 15 years MicroSoc was graced with 52 batches, the batchnames of which are microorganisms and its parts and is composed of UPLBians who took care and are currently taking at least three units of Microbiology. At present, 289 microbes are scattered in and out of the university. Some of them are already abroad like Marietta Lamug, The first president of the organization, who is presently a pediatrician in the United States. Most are in different private companies, some are pursuing a career in Medicine, some are teaching he in UPLB (like Ms. Rina Bagsic-Opulencia, Ms. Jamina Samson-Arboleda and Mr. Ernesto Aragon). The core of this excellent academic organization are the resident members - whose faces whom you see everyday at the green tambayan at the mouth of the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS) Lobby.
Through the years, MicroSoc has had numerous achievements including being the overall champion of PalaCASan, a CAS-based organizations' sportsfest, in 1992 and 1994. It has also sponsored two most watched and most successful concerts in the history of UPLB - Side A in 1996 and South Border in 1997. MicroSoc is also the producer of the Annual MCB Inter-Lab Quiz Contest and the Mikrobyo Quiz Contest. It also celebrates its anniversary week by having a week-long exhibit, symposia, career orientation, outreach and film showing among others.
TUMS indeed had a colorful fifteen years, watch
out for a better MicroSoc in the coming years.
